Lighten your city by the power of the river

Novel Hi-Tech (NHT) was incorporated in Bulgaria for serving as a platform for developing a novel technology of intensive production of hydroelectricity out of flat-flowing rivers.

Background

NHT is a start-up company. It is founded for exploiting the novel concept of intensively extracting hydro-electric energy out of flat flowing rivers, with gradients lower than 1.5%.
The technological concept was outlaid by Eng. On Hoter Ishay – who owns the intellectual property rights for the novel technology. Initial analysis was conducted by the Hydraulic Laboratory of Sofia University and it indicates interesting potential.

The main elements of the novel technology

A new type of rotor
A water-flow management scheme.
Other elements

The generator, the electrical control of the generator, the integration with the electrical greed, etc. – are standard off-the-shelf components that had to be selected and adjusted to the new design.

Next steps

The technology may evolve into several distinct sub-technologies – per the geographical locations, economic considerations, size of installations, regulations and other aspects of the specific projects. It is too early to envisage all possible forms of application at this early stage. NHT will focus on one or two potential segments, while laying the foundations for other alternatives as well.
The scope of the role of NHT in the potential global operation will be defined and concluded in the early stages of its operations.

Start

Initial activity focus

The initial activity of NHT will be focused on two parallel paths – both designated to build a working prototype and to provide a proof of concept, as well as to serve as model for future commercialization. Both paths were chosen for simplifying the initial realization.

The first path

Barge

One simple model of exploiting the technology is erecting hydroelectric installation on a fixed floating barge. The advantage of that embodiment at the early stage is simplifying the authorisation process and hence the time required for having a working prototype.
Initial prototyping model should be for several hundred Kilowatts. Barges are valid for flows of 0.3 – 5 m2/s, and require minimum of 30 m3/sec of water flowing through the barge. For various reasons, it seems that the largest barge can achieve 5-7 Megawatts – depending on flow conditions.
The barge installation is a valid commercial product. It can be shipped and installed all over the world, wherever rivers are flowing.

The second path

Existing private channels/river sections

At the early stage, it seems that erecting a permanent installation is preferable on private channels or private river sections. The main reason is reducing hassle of authorisations and hence reducing the time for a running project.
Permanent installation permits a higher efficiency of production than barge (mainly due to different dimensions of the installation). Water flows should be similar or bigger than for barges.
